In the bedroom, Jenny was raking through the wardrobe, determined to find exactly the right thing to wear. She really wanted to please Dev. And Richard, of course – that went without saying. But she was just so pleased that, for once, Dev wasn’t treating her like a waste of space. This was her big chance to prove to him that she wasn’t a total fuck-up, that she could be good for Richard, and she was determined to get it right. Fortunately, quite a lot of her clothes had migrated to Richard’s flat, but the choice was still limited and it was proving harder than she’d expected. The bed was already covered with clothes she had considered and discarded. She wanted to look young and fashionable but at the same time demure and ladylike. Her eyes lit up as they fell on a fifties wiggle dress in a deep red. It looked like something Doris Day might have worn, and you didn’t get much more demure and ladylike than her. Plus it was vintage, and Richard was always going on about wanting to go back to old-fashioned values, so it was exactly the right look. She did up the buttons, pushed her hair on top of her head and pouted at herself in the mirror. Perfect.

‘Oh!’ Dev’s eyes widened as she rejoined them in the living room. ‘Is that what you’re wearing?’

‘Well, yeah,’ she faltered. ‘What’s wrong with it?’

‘Nothing, it’s just—’

‘You look gorgeous,’ Richard said, taking her hand. ‘Let’s go – Susie’s outside in the car.’

‘Well, it’ll certainly cheer up our troubled teens,’ Dev said, almost to himself, as they went out of the door. ‘There’ll be more wood than in the Forest of Dean.’
